About Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan is nestled like a jewel in the eastern Himalayas,
south of China (Tibet) and north of India (the States of West Bengal and
Assam). Map of Bhutan Blessed with
dramatic scenery and a devout Buddhist
faith, the country at first glance
embodies the romantic western notion
of Shangri-La. Little known outside its
region, the Kingdom welcomed tourists
for the first time in 1974.
Despite its perceived remoteness,
Bhutan belongs to the global community.
The Royal Government, under the
leadership of the Fourth King, HRH
Jigme Singye Wangchuck, adopted
progressive policies to provide citizens
with the benefits of modernization while
preserving valued aspects of the
Kingdom’s heritage: strong religious
practices, unique arts and crafts, and
indigenous medicine, as well as natural
beauty, abundant wildlife, and rare flora.
In March 2005, the Royal Government of Bhutan unveiled a new
constitution, which was subsequently shared with the entire population
for their input and comments. The Fourth King visited each district to
discuss the draft with the people and to prepare them for the first
democratic elections in the nation’s history.

In December 2006, Bhutan's Fourth
King, abdicated in favor of his son,
Crown Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyel
Wangchuck. The election was held in
April 2008, setting Bhutan on its
historic and peaceful transition to
constitutional democracy. The formal
coronation of His Majesty, the Fifth
King, and the ratification of the
constitution will take place later in 2008.
The government’s progress in
improving health and education is
remarkable, and its environmental
policies are regarded as models
throughout the world. Friends of
Bhutan's Culture is a catalyst for
similar strides in the cultural arena.
With dignity and charm, this last Buddhist Kingdom in the Himalayas is
committed to preserving its essence—a great gift to be passed on to
Bhutan’s future generations and to the world.
